The software is available in two versions, 'Essentials' and 'Expert,' which offer different levels of function, with introductory pricing starting at $49/€49/£49 for the Essentials version.
It also brings a greater degree of control, including HSL sliders, a channel mixer for optimizing Black and White conversions and, at customer request, the ability to add vignetting. Version 3 adds new film looks and color filters.

The latest version, announced in June, now includes the ability to mimic up to 60 famous black and white, and color films, based on calibration from professional prints, giving what the company claims is the most precise film simulation on the market. The subject steps farther back so they appear the same size in the camera, and the background is also the same size - but we see much less of it.DxO has released FilmPack 3, the third version of its sliver halide simulation processing software.
In the very simple illustration below, we see a camera and background that don’t change position, but the lens field of view (how wide of an area it sees) does, and the subject therefore changes position to maintain the same size in the camera’s view. Another way to think about it is to take a top-down view of the scene. The difference in distance between the background and the subject changed relatively very little, while the difference between the camera and the subject changed massively. What we used to call “compression” is simply that the distance from camera to subject has changed dramatically, as we just pointed out in the previous paragraph. That’s great for street photography, event photography, or any situation where you want candid portraits where the subject doesn’t stop what they’re doing because you’re pointing a camera their way.īut going back to the background… why does it look so different, and so much better? This is an effect commonly called “compression”, however if you do a little googling on the topic, you’ll find that the idea of lens compression has been debunked and that it doesn’t actually exist! (F-Stoppers did an excellent article and video on the topic). This lets you do beautiful portraits at a distance. Plus, the subject was even farther away from the camera, which can be very beneficial.

This photo was shot at 60mm (120mm full frame equivalent, or about 75mm APS-C). And the background is even less defined - both because we see less of it, and it’s more out of focus. Yeah, that does look even better! The face shape hasn’t changed much, but it is a little different.
