He led the Steelers down for a field goal to increase their lead. Lions still trail, 26-13.ĩ:54 PM ET: Dwayne Haskins entered the game for Pittsburgh, completing 3-of-6 passes for 37 yards. Blough may have earned himself a backup quarterback job after this performance and how it stacks up to Boyle’s. This time he hits WR Javon McKinley for a 10-yard TOUCHDOWN toss to close the gap. Craig Reynolds punches in the TOUCHDOWN from 3 yards out to cut the lead to 26-20 for Pittsburgh.ġ0:07 PM ET: Blough successfully leads the Lions down for another scoring drive. Steelers scoreġ0:24 PM ET: As great as the Blough-led comeback attempt was for the Lions, it came to an end when Haskins hit Trey Edmunds for a 19-yard pass to ice the game with under 2:00 in the game. No matter how much coffee Dan Campbell can drink, even he has yet to put firepower in this offense, apparently. Starting quarterback Jared Goff did not play in this one while David Blough fared much better than Tim Boyle, perhaps securing himself a backup quarterback job for the season. He’s a dynamic threat with the ball in his hands, no matter how he gets it.Īs for the Lions, they are left with more questions than answers following this matchup. Harris carried the ball just 4 times for 10 yards but caught 2 passes for 53 yards out of the backfield. Second-round draft pick Pat Freiermuth hauled in 2 catches for scores in the outing, providing a great red-zone target for Roethlisberger.įellow rookie Najee Harris proved what made him such a highly sought-after prospect at running back. It also helped that Roethlisberger was able to clearly show a great rapport with a new tight end. They still have to answer questions about their offensive line before they vault up too many power rankings, but one thing is for sure: Big Ben is back. Roethlisberger’s arm looked terrific in the process, showing little cause for concern with him leading the show this season. He took incredible care of the ball and made multiple plays in the pocket where he extended the action and found a receiver downfield. Roethlisberger, playing in his first action of this preseason, completed 8-of-10 passes for 137 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. While they entered the game wanting to answer their backup quarterback quandary, Roethlisberger put that question in the rearview. Pittsburgh has had a mixed bag of success so far this preseason, winning all three games against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and now the Lions. Hoping to learn more about their backup quarterback situation, the Steelers were actually presented with a vintage Ben Roethlisberger performance, giving hope for 2021 after all.
